SHIPP, David Herbert

No.1808711, Sergeant, David Herbert SHIPP
Aged 23

Glider Pilot Regiment, Army Air Corps
Killed in Action on Monday, 25th September 1944

David Herbert Shipp was born in 1921 ( Hitchin Q2-1921 3A:1460), son of Fred and Rhoda SHIPP (née LUCAS), of Lode.
He was initially enlisted in the Royal Artillery No.1808711 in 1941.

In the 1939 register, at Lode Moors,Lode Fen were his parents, father Fred [16-5-1895] a builder's labourer and mother Rhoda [26-11-1888]. There is 1 closed record.

Paradata have the following:
D Squadron, 1st Wing.
Sgt Shipp's body is assumed to have been recovered by US 101st Airborne Division troops on the south bank of the river Rhine sometime after 4 October 1944. Field burial in the US Military Cemetery at Molenhoek, Heumen. His remains were moved to Mook on 2 April 1947. (Battle of Arnhem, September 1944, Roll of Honour, 5th revised edition, 2011).

The date of death written on the CWGC concentration card is an error. It is assumed that he drowned whilst trying to swim across the Rhine on the 25th September. The evacuation from Arnhem began that evening as the Germans were successfully infiltrating the airborne positions. The Glider Pilot Regiment lost 47 killed that day.

"D" Squadron were based at RAF Keevil (near Trowbridge) and went over in Horsa gliders towed by Short Stirlings

Horsa Mk 1, not the easiest to load even a modified Jeep, but the folding nose of the Mk 2 simplified things. The Horsa could carry up to 28 fully armed troops, and the two pilots became infantrymen with them after the landing. They could alternatively carry a jeep and trailer.
